Several KC Old Boys in Atlanta were on hand for the kick-off ceremony for a series of activities that will celebrate Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence in Atlanta. They included: chapter president, Anthony Williams and his wife Joelle; Treasurer Earl Adams and his wife Alicia, Glen Laman and his wife Toni; and Glendon Thompson who is also president of the International Association of Caribbean Organizations (IACO). Board members Allan "Barry" Miller and Sedley Morris worked behind the scenes to help make the event a success.
The launch ceremony was held at the Atlanta City Hall Atrium on January 22, 2012. After a cocktail hour, the evening's program started with a medley of Jamaican folk songs by the Errol Moore Quartet. This was followed by the playing of the Jamaican and US national anthems.
Jamaica's honorary consul to Atlanta, Vin Martin, gave the welcome and opening remarks. The invocation was led by Rev. Dr. Winston Lawson. Special greetings were conveyed by Ms. Sonji Jacobs on behalf of the city of Atlanta; the honorable Ceasar C. Mitchell, president of the Atlanta City Council; State representative Billy Mitchell; and Dr. Walter Young and his Wife Sonjia on behalf of Ambassador Andrew Young.
The keynote address was given by Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency, Audrey P. Marks who officially declared the events open.
Entertainment for the occasion was provided the folk group, Rythmz of the Caribbean; Jamaica's foremost Soprano, Dawn Marie who was accompanied by Dr. Barry Davies; Sarge and de Pickney Dem who performed a skit; and songs by Mrs. Erica Newell. Music was provided by DJ Extreme.
The various events will be held throughout the year and are planned by the Jamaica 50th – Atlanta Planning Committee under the patronage of the Jamaican Honorary Consul in Atlanta, Vin Martin.
