On March 1, 2021, as a new member of the group, I envisioned hosting a reunion for the Class of '84. Eager to find my place in the daily conversations, I dedicated myself to making our 40th Anniversary Reunion an unforgettable experience. Although the support was not as robust as hoped, we were delighted to welcome about ninety members of the Class of ’84 for our celebration on June 15, 2024, at the Pegasus Hotel. The evening commenced at 5 pm. and concluded at 11 pm.
Guests were greeted by music from Andrew “Vintage” Carey, creating a lively atmosphere as classmates reconnected after four decades. Our Master of Ceremonies, Bishop Dr. Purcell Jackson, opened the night with the Jamaican National Anthem, followed by an invocation from Rev. Lennox Scarlett and a warm welcome from President Peter Bailey. Peter expressed his gratitude for everyone’s support, promising an enjoyable evening.
The Class of ’84 (79-84) took the opportunity to honor several pivotal figures: Ms. Helen Douglas (former Vice Principal and French Teacher), Mrs. Opal Branche (Chemistry Teacher), and Mr. Keith Plummer (former Physical Education Teacher).
Vice Principal, Madame Hall delivered the Principal’s Address on behalf of Mr. Myrie, who had a prior commitment. We were also privileged to have Mr. Richard Lindsay, President of KCOBAJA, and our scholarship honorees, Mr. Stephen Gowdie and Mr. Rojaughn Stephens, in attendance.
Peter Bailey then transitioned the evening to its main segment, where awards were presented to our honorees: Ms. Helene Douglas received her award from Peter Bailey, Ms. Opal Branche from Dr. Curven Whyte, and Mr. Plummer from Rev. Lennox Scarlett. Our Treasurer, Paul Reid, delivered a moving tribute penned by Rohan Goldsmith in memory of our 35 fallen classmates. He then presented medallions to distinguished members, including Peter Bailey, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Terrence Bent, Dr. Curven Whyte, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Wayne Josephs, Michael “Rattymore” Francis, Earl Chin, Bishop Dr. Purcell Jackson, Basil Lee, Richard Mahabeer, Stephen Morrison, Christopher Patrick, and myself, Wayne Page. Receiving a standing ovation for my three years of dedication to planning this reunion was an unexpected and deeply moving honor.
I had the privilege of presenting honorary awards to Mr. Stephen Gowdie and Mr. Rojaughn Stephens for their impressive academic growth since being named our scholarship recipients in 2022. Dinner was served alongside performances by Althea Hewitt and Andrew “Livi” Livingston, with musical accompaniment provided by Andrew “Vintage” Carey.
Bishop Dr. Purcell Jackson closed the formal program with a heartfelt vote of thanks to attendees, honorees, guests, donors, well-wishers, and sponsors.
The Class of 1984 (79-84) extends sincere gratitude to our sponsors: Tastee Limited (Simone Chanpong), Golden Krust (Earl Chin), Birds Bakery (John Bird), and Exodus Insurance Brokers (Garfield Coke) for their support of the event journal.
During the reunion, we raised $174,847 (JA and other currencies) in cash, with an additional $600,000 (JA) in pledges toward our Centenary commitment. We ended this special evening with a class photo, capturing the spirit of this milestone celebration.
Sadly, we lost a dear classmate who attended the reunion. Fitzhugh “Bruce” Robinson passed away on September 3, 2024. I remember him calling from his daughter’s graduation on June 4, 2024, excited to attend the reunion. Rest in peace, Fitz; you will be missed.
