The KCOBA Florida Chapter held its 23rd Annual Big Purple Session fundraiser on Saturday, October 12th, 2024 at the Sport of Kings Theatre at Gulf Stream Park in Hallandale Beach.
The weekend events kicked off on Friday evening with a Meet and Greet at La Veranda Restaurant and Bar in Plantation where a sizeable contingent of KCOBs and KC supporters gathered for tasty food and entertaining music, including a live Reggae band.
The activities continued on Saturday morning where players gathered at the Henry D. Perry Park in Miramar for the traditional inter-KC scrimmage football game. Happily, there were no major injuries or any medical emergencies.
The weekend culminated with the Big Purple Session which featured the legendary international Reggae band, Third World, and local DJ, Yoyo. Ever the consummate professionals, Third World with AJ Brown as the lead vocalist, and band leader Cat Coore regally bedecked in purple, performed a medley of the many of their greatest hits, including “Now that we Found Love”, “Try Jay Love”, and “96 Degrees in the Shade”. The band also paid homage to the KC gathering by appropriately singing Prince’s “Purple Rain” which was obviously well received by the crowd.
Despite the effects of Hurricane Milton which impacted the Sarasota, Tampa Bay, Fort Myers, and Jacksonville and other surrounding areas, and which resulted in some of our regular out of state attendees not making the trip this year, the event was nonetheless well-attended under the circumstances. The night also featured the Big Purple Session raffle drawing with the grand prize being a Caribbean cruise.
“The Big Purple Session is the flagship fundraiser world-wide for our beloved alma mater, Kingston College, and each year it attracts hundreds of KC old boys and KC supporters from around the world. We are extremely grateful for all who have supported us throughout the years. Moreover, we are honored to have had the great Third World as our feature performance this year,” said KCOBA Florida President, Dr. Wayne Fraser.
“Third World is excited to partner with the KCOBA Florida at its annual Big Purple Session. Our band is committed to excellence which has earned us international acclaim for nearly five decades. Similarly, Kingston College’s rich academic and athletic history is renowned, along with the extraordinary loyalty and support of the KC Old Boys and KC’s ardent supporters. We respect and admire KC”, said Third World band leader, Cat Coore.
All proceeds from the event goes to the benefit Kingston College.
