As Kingston College celebrates its centenary, we are reminded that this milestone is not merely a reflection on our storied past but also a charge to boldly step into the future. One of the signature projects marking this historic occasion is the North Street Campus Frontage Improvement Project—an initiative that perfectly encapsulates the school’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and heritage.
This transformative project began as a vision of Kingston College Old Boy Reynold Scott, Chairman of the Kingston College Development Trust Fund (KCDTF). His aspiration was to create a welcoming, modern, and functional entrance to the school, one that not only elevates its aesthetics but also instils pride in all who pass through its gates. A staunch believer in the harmonious interplay of design and purpose, Mr. Scott often emphasizes the feng shui effect of the project, describing how the redesigned frontage channels positive energy and creates a sense of balance and upliftment for the Kingston College community.
Speaking on the significance of the project, Mr. Scott remarked: "Kingston College is the foundation of our individual formation, and it has shaped us to give back to school and community. The transformation of the physical facilities, therefore, is not just about enhancing the appearance of our school; it is a symbol of progress and growth, and a commitment to providing the best possible learning environment for our boys. The new frontage reflects the pride and spirit of the KC community and also serves as a testament to the dedication and continuing support by our alumni and stakeholders, from generation to generation. Let's continue to give."
A Vision to Inspire
At its core, the North Street Campus Frontage Improvement Project aims to transform the face of Kingston College into a beacon of modernity and innovation while respecting the historical essence of the institution. It is a testament to the school’s dedication to fostering an environment that reflects the high standards we set for our students and the broader Fortis family.
The vision extends beyond bricks and mortar; it’s about creating a space that speaks to the aspirations of our students and alumni, inspires excellence, and fosters a sense of belonging. The redesigned frontage is both a physical and symbolic representation of Kingston College’s enduring legacy and our ambitions for the next 100 years.
Key Objectives
The project was guided by three primary objectives:
- Modernization: To upgrade the appearance of the North Street campus to reflect contemporary architectural standards, seamlessly blending heritage with innovation.
- Aesthetic Enhancement: To create a visually appealing frontage using thoughtful landscaping, lighting, and design elements that inspire pride and community spirit.
- Functionality: To ensure the redesigned frontage meets the practical needs of students, staff, and visitors, including safe pedestrian access, improved parking, and better overall usability.
Notable Features and Improvements
The ground-breaking ceremony for this transformational project took place on July 12, 2024, and today, with the project 90% complete, the results are nothing short of remarkable:
- Main Canopy: A new canopy over the guard house now protects guards, students, and visitors from the elements. The canopy proudly displays the school’s motto: Fortis Cadere Cedere Non Potest (The Brave May Fall But Never Yield), a constant reminder of the values we uphold.
- Sanitary Facility: A new sanitary facility has been added to the guard house, addressing a longstanding need for convenience and functionality.
- Enhanced Security Fencing: The old chain-link fence has been replaced with an elegant metalwork fence, standing approximately 8 feet high and adding both security and sophistication to the campus.
- Widened Entrance: The second entrance has been expanded from 13 feet to 18 feet, improving traffic flow and accessibility.
- Parking Area: A newly constructed parking area now accommodates up to 10 vehicles, a significant improvement for visitors and staff.
- Re-paved Driveways: All driveways in the front yard of the school have been re-paved, offering a polished and professional appearance that complements the overall design.
A Transformational Impact
The impact of this project extends far beyond its physical attributes. It has already begun to transform how the Kingston College community perceives and interacts with the North Street campus.
- Enhanced Reputation: The modern, welcoming design elevates the school’s image as a forward-thinking institution, solidifying its status as a leader in education.
- Community Pride: The improvements inspire pride among students, parents, alumni, and staff, creating an atmosphere that motivates excellence and unity.
- Visitor Experience: The new frontage provides a warm and professional welcome to all visitors, including prospective students and their families, further enhancing the school’s appeal.
A Grateful Acknowledgment
This remarkable transformation would not have been possible without the generosity and vision of its supporters. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Reynold Scott, whose leadership and commitment as the conceptualizer of this project have been nothing short of extraordinary. His significant financial contribution has been pivotal in bringing this vision to life.
We also express profound gratitude to Hon. Delroy Chuck, Minister of Justice and a proud Old Boy, whose contributions have further underscored the unity and dedication of the Fortis family during this centenary celebration.
Together, these contributions—totalling an estimated J$20 million—stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of Kingston College and its community.
Special recognition is also due to Peter Francis, the talented Kingston College Old Boy and architect behind this inspiring redesign, and Horace Wright, the project director, whose meticulous oversight ensured the seamless execution of this ambitious undertaking.
Looking Forward
As we approach the full completion of this landmark project, one thing is clear: the North Street Campus Frontage Improvement Project is more than just a physical upgrade. It is a statement of intent—a declaration that Kingston College is prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the next century with the same resilience and excellence that have defined its past.
This project is a gift not just to the school but to the wider Kingston College community. It inspires hope, pride, and a renewed sense of belonging. To everyone who has supported this initiative, whether through donations or words of encouragement, we say thank you.
Let us continue to work together to uphold the values of Kingston College and ensure that Fortis Cadere Cedere Non Potest remains not just a motto, but a way of life.
Fortis Forever!
