My name is Tisome Nugent, “Tammy” to those who watched me grow up. I stand here today with a mix of sorrow and deep gratitude for Alton’s life.

My mom taught at Kingston College for many years while I was growing up and for many of those years as a little kid I also wanted to go to KC, despite being a girl. Being part of the Fortis family, I have been blessed to be surrounded by incredible men who modeled integrity, love, and strength.

Alton was the embodiment of these values, but where he truly shone—where his legacy took root—was in the role of father. Anyone who knew Alton knew that Sydney was the light of his life. Their bond was magical. Whether they were cooking together or sharing meals, everything they touched seemed five-star.

I used to joke that Alton should adopt me, because I envied Sydney’s amazing palate! If you know me, you know I love my belly! Alton was always ready to host Sydney’s friends or step in as their protector on their many adventures. Their joy, respect, and love for each other were evident in everything they did. We all watched as Alton poured so much care into raising a remarkable young woman. It was inspiring to see him nurture Sydney’s brilliance, and there’s no doubt she will make her own indelible mark on the world.

Like Karen said, Alton made everyone feel special, and as we have heard from many, Alton’s impact was deeply personal as he seemed to connect in the ways we each needed him. When I became a parent, Alton was one of the people I turned to for support, He quickly became part of team "Cam-ster”, the nickname he fondly gave my son. He didn’t just offer advice—he asked questions that made me think deeply, challenging me to face truths and be intentional about how I parented.

Alton lived with purpose and love. He gave his heart to everything he did—whether it was raising Sydney, supporting his Fortis brothers, uplifting his community, feeding whoever needed to be fed or being there for a friend.

His legacy reminds us to show up for the people we love, to face life’s challenges with grace, and to always leave the world better than we found it.

Sydney, your dad adored you. You were his pride and joy, and through you, his light will continue to shine. Through your relationship, I’ve learned the power of love, commitment, and intentional parenting.

Say it with me:

Fortis Cadere, Cedere non Potest.

A brave man has fallen, but his legacy will never yield.

Rest in peace, Alton.

Thank you for showing us how to live, how to love, and how to leave a meaningful legacy.”
