From the Kingston College Old Boys Association (KCOBA)
It is with profound sadness that the Kingston College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) mourns the passing of Professor Dr John Ambrose Samuel Hall , an extraordinary Fortis whose life exemplified the highest ideals of Kingston College. A distinguished scholar, pioneering medical professional, and dedicated mentor, Professor John Hall leaves behind a legacy of excellence, service, and deep devotion to his alma mater.
Professor Hall's journey at Kingston College began on Monday, January 1939 , when he entered the institution as a bright young student, having been duly registered as Student No. 403. The KC experience was truly enlightening and John Hall relished it. While he might not have excelled on the playing fields of Clovelly Park, he was an ardent supporter of everything Fortis; he became the quintessential Fortis flag bearer. Even in his early years, he demonstrated an exceptional intellect, strong leadership qualities, and a deep commitment to the school's principles. His academic excellence and natural ability to inspire others led to his appointment as Headboy in 1944, a position he held for an unprecedented two consecutive years-a first in the school's history. As Headboy in 1944, he delivered his valedictorian address in Latin , a remarkable feat that reflected not only his mastery of classical studies but also his unwavering dedication to academic rigour. He might have graduated from KC the following year, but he never left.
In 1945, Professor Hall won the prestigious medical scholarship, setting him on a path that would lead to a distinguished career in neurology. His contributions to medicine were vast and impactful, influencing generations of doctors and shaping advancements in neurological research. He was widely recognized for his expertise, integrity, and dedication to patient care. As a teacher and mentor, he was instrumental in guiding young medical professionals, ensuring that his knowledge and passion for the field were passed on to those who followed in his footsteps.
Despite his many professional achievements, Professor Hall remained deeply connected to Kingston College throughout his life. He was a proud and engaged Fortis who kept up with the school's developments and actively supported its growth. His love for KC was not just sentimental-it was tangible, demonstrated through his consistent involvement and contributions to the school's advancement. His unwavering belief in the values of discipline, perseverance, and academic excellence made him a beacon of inspiration for the entire Fortis fraternity.
Professor Hall's commitment to Kingston College extended beyond his personal connection; he ensured that his two sons also attended KC , passing down the tradition of Fortis excellence to the next generation. This decision spoke volumes about his faith in the institution's ability to nurture young minds and develop well-rounded individuals prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.
His life was a testament to the Kingston College motto: "Fortis Cadere, Cedere Non Potest"-The Brave May Fall But Never Yield . He faced challenges with resilience, pursued excellence with determination, and lived with a spirit of resolute fortitude. Even as he achieved international recognition in his field, he remained grounded in the values instilled in him during his formative years at Kingston College.
Professor Hall's passing is a great loss to the medical community, the Kingston College fraternity, and the wider society . However, his impact endures. His commitment to excellence, love for education, and contributions to humanity will continue to inspire generations of Kingston College students, medical professionals, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
On behalf of the Kingston College Old Boys Association, we extend our deepest condolences to Professor Hall's family, friends, colleagues, and all who mourn his passing. While we grieve his loss, we also celebrate a life well lived-a life that truly embodied the spirit of Kingston College.
Sleep well, our Fortis Brother! May you rise with the Angels! Your legacy lives on, and the Fortis Family is proud and privileged to call you one of ours!
Fortis forever! Forever Fortis!
