In the year of its centenary celebration, Kingston College (KC) has earned one of its most significant accolades yet: the designation of "Exceptionally High" overall effectiveness by the National Education Inspectorate (NEI). This historic rating, released on June 13, 2025, following an inspection held on January 16, represents the highest possible judgement the NEI can confer upon a Jamaican school. For Kingston College, it is an affirmation not just of academic strength, but of an enduring institutional culture that champions excellence, equity, and holistic development.

The timing could not be more fitting. As the Fortis nation marks 100 years since its founding by the visionary Rt. Reverend Percival Gibson, this national recognition stands as both a celebration of legacy and a clear signal of continued relevance. It is yet another milestone in what has already been a banner year for KC: the Governor General's Proclamation of April 16 as Kingston College Day; the release of centenary commemorative stamps by the Post & Telecommunications Department; and the unforgettable ceremony on April 14, when the Mayor of Kingston presided over a symbolic reissuing of the Keys to the City—all powerful public affirmations of the school's indelible imprint on Jamaica's national life.

The NEI inspection report confirms in the clearest terms what generations of Fortis men and their families have long known: Kingston College is not just a school—it is a standard.

Understanding the NEI Inspection
The National Education Inspectorate operates under the Ministry of Education and Youth and is charged with the critical role of assessing the quality of teaching, learning, leadership, and institutional effectiveness across Jamaica's schools. At the core of the inspection process are eight key questions, each probing a different dimension of the school's operations - from the quality of leadership and instructional delivery to the performance of students, curriculum quality, and student well-being.

In their assessment, inspectors observed classes, reviewed student work, held structured interviews with staff and students, and scrutinized internal documentation. The inspection also included a Value-Added Model for Assessing Schools (VAMAS), which tracks students' progress in English and mathematics from Grade 6 to Grade 7, placing them into performance bands—Alphas, Betas, or Gammas.

All judgments are made on a five-point scale, ranging from Level 1 ("Needs Immediate Support") to Level 5 ("Exceptionally High"). Notably, Level 4 - "Good" - is considered the realistic benchmark for every school. Level 5, which KC has achieved across key domains, signals performance well beyond national expectations.

Kingston College's Outstanding Performance
The NEI's findings paint a compelling portrait of an institution firing on all cylinders. Here are some of the highlights:

Leadership and Management: Exceptionally High
The school is led by a united and visionary team comprising the Board, Principal, senior and middle management. Inspectors noted strong stakeholder engagement, clear accountability mechanisms, and a culture of continuous self-evaluation and strategic planning aligned with national priorities. The role of governance was singled out for its effectiveness in steering the school's development trajectory.

Teaching and Learning: Good to Exceptionally High
KC's teaching faculty was praised for solid subject knowledge, structured lesson delivery using the 5E model, and embedded assessments. While teaching was rated as "Good" overall, the school was encouraged to strengthen differentiation and ICT integration to further elevate instructional quality. Importantly, students were found to be actively engaged and collaborative in most learning settings.

Academic Performance: Exceptionally High
KC's results in national examinations remain outstanding. Between 2019 and 2023, pass rates in CSEC English Language consistently ranged from 87 to 94 percent, well above the national average of 75 to 80 percent. In mathematics—a subject that poses national challenges—KC still excelled, with pass rates averaging 25 to 35 percentage points above national figures.
Technical and vocational subjects also saw strong outcomes, particularly in information technology, office administration, and business education, although the report encouraged broader participation in creative and industrial arts.

Student Progress: Strong and Sustained
The school earned an "Exceptionally High" rating for students' progress in English and a "Good" rating in mathematics. These outcomes speak to the strength of both classroom instruction and academic intervention strategies designed to support sustained growth over time.

Personal and Social Development: Exceptionally High
KC boys were commended for their strong civic, spiritual, and economic awareness. Inspectors noted their positive behaviour, leadership qualities, and deep connection to Jamaican cultural and national identity. These attributes are clearly nurtured not just through formal curricula but through daily school life and co-curricular engagement.

Curriculum and Enhancement Programmes: Exceptionally High
KC's curriculum was found to be broad, balanced, and responsive to student needs. The school offers academic and vocational pathways leading to CSEC, CAPE, and City & Guilds certifications. Enhancement programmes support leadership, citizenship, and extracurricular involvement, often in collaboration with community and alumni partners.

Health, Safety and Well-being: Exceptionally High
From trained staff and secure facilities to high student attendance and structured welfare services, the school was found to foster a safe and supportive environment for all learners.

Congratulations Are In Order
This proud achievement would not have been possible without the outstanding leadership of Principal Dave Myrie and his team of Vice Principals, academic, administrative, and ancillary staff, all working under the guidance of Chairman Michael Vaccianna and the KC Board of Management. Their vision and commitment have been central to Kingston College's success.
Congratulations are also due to the students, parents, and guardians, who have played their part with diligence and pride - and to the wider Fortis family, whose enduring support is a wellspring of strength. Together, we have made this possible.

Living the Legacy of Bishop Gibson
In moments such as these, it is only natural to reflect on the vision of KC's founding father, the Rt. Reverend Percival William Gibson, who believed that education should empower boys from every social class to become thoughtful, capable, and upright men. Were Bishop Gibson alive today, he would undoubtedly be proud to see that Kingston College remains true to this vision—nurturing excellence, providing opportunity, and shaping men of character.
Over the past five years, I have had the honour of nominating Bishop Gibson, posthumously, for the Order of Merit (OM) - Jamaica's highest national honour - recognizing his unparalleled contribution to education and religion. These nominations have, regrettably, not yet borne fruit. But in true Fortis spirit, I persisted, submitting a fifth consecutive nomination in February 2025.
Surely, there can be no more fitting year than this centenary year for the Government of Jamaica to finally confer this richly deserved honour on the man who changed the landscape of Jamaican education and gave birth to an institution that continues to mould generations of nation-builders.

We urge our national leaders to seize this historic moment and do the right thing: award the Order of Merit to Bishop Percival Gibson in this year of national and Fortis celebration. It would be a powerful and poetic affirmation of a legacy that continues to shine.

The Work Ahead: Sustaining the Standard
While we rightly celebrate this exceptional rating, we must also embrace the challenge of sustaining it. As the NEI report affirms, "Exceptionally High" is not a destination—it is a standard to be lived every day. Maintaining this performance will require vigilant attention to instructional quality, responsiveness to student needs, and a commitment to innovation and inclusion.
To this end, the role of the Curriculum Oversight Committee (COC) becomes especially vital. The COC is charged with reviewing and strengthening the curriculum to ensure it remains rigorous, responsive, and aligned with both national goals and global best practices. This includes:

• Updating curricular offerings to reflect current educational research and workforce demands
• Promoting inclusive and differentiated learning pathways for academic and vocational excellence
• Supporting professional development so that teachers are empowered to deliver high-quality instruction
• Ensuring alignment with Ministry of Education policies and international benchmarks, so KC boys are prepared not just to pass exams, but to thrive in a rapidly changing world

The Committee will also monitor implementation of the NEI's new recommendations, which call for:

1. Enhanced differentiated instruction and questioning techniques.
2. Greater integration of ICT into lesson delivery.
3. More consistent attention to classroom and bathroom maintenance.
4. Expanded efforts to foster environmental consciousness among students.

Working in close collaboration with the Principal, Heads of Departments, and the Board of Management, the Curriculum Oversight Committee will help ensure that KC not only maintains its "Exceptionally High" status, but continues to grow stronger in every area.

Importantly, too, sustaining this standard will also require the full support—financially and otherwise—of our alumni. The Fortis network is one of Kingston College's greatest assets, and we call upon Old Boys everywhere to continue playing their part in this new phase of the school's development. Your contributions—whether through mentorship, advocacy, or financial support—make an enormous difference.

As we push ahead with the KC Centenary Projects, including the modernization of facilities and the expansion of academic and co-curricular offerings, we appeal earnestly to alumni to give generously and give purposefully. The foundation has been laid. Let us now build boldly upon it, together.

Conclusion: A Moment Worth Celebrating
Kingston College's centenary year has already gifted us with unforgettable moments. But perhaps none is more important for the future of the school than this NEI endorsement. For current students, it affirms that they walk the halls of one of the finest institutions in Jamaica. For alumni, it is proof that the school we love continues to honour its proud tradition. For future generations, it is a promise that KC remains committed to excellence.
Let us take a moment to revel in this achievement—but let us also recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of Fortis. Because, as Bishop Gibson taught us: "What is good is never good enough when better is possible."
