The Annual Gala Dinner of the KCOBA USA New York Chapter is more than an event, it celebrates brotherhood, legacy, and mission. This year was significant as we marked 43 years of Mission Impact at KC and joined the global Fortis family in celebrating Kingston College’s 100th Anniversary. It was also our first gala without our ace organizer, the late Alton “Mice” Brown — and in his honor, we rose to the occasion and delivered a truly unforgettable evening.
A Warm Welcome
Guests were warmly welcomed by board members who efficiently managed the large turnout. The Fortis merchandise table was a popular attraction, featuring memorabilia available both onsite and online. Live music by the David Lee Jones Band set the perfect ambiance for an evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, as final preparations came together behind the scenes.
Mistress of Ceremonies Ms. Ingrid Dixon opened the program. Ms. Nicole Young of the Morant Bay High School Alumni Association delivered stirring renditions of the U.S. and Jamaican national anthems. Mr. James Haynes delivered the invocation—a touching symbol of transition after years of hearing it from stalwart board member Mr. Norman Scott.
President Dwayne Montaque warmly welcomed everyone and expressed gratitude for their continued support. Greetings followed from Christopher Benjamin of the Consul General’s office and UJAA’s Donovan Wilson, both affirming KC’s role as a pillar of excellence.
Principal Dave Myrie shared updates on campus life, challenges, and the recent centenary celebrations in Jamaica. A video review of the 2024–2025 year reminded us of the ongoing mission and our collective achievements.
Honoring Excellence
As dinner was served, DJ Prentice of Soul Tone Disco kept the atmosphere vibrant for the awards presentation:
Hon. Justice Sam D. Walker received the Community Service Award, presented by Euton “Tubby” Bucknor (KCOBA Florida).
Mr. Ian Wilkinson earned the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his legal impact and unwavering support of KC’s Chess Team. His wife, Khadine “Ms. Kitty” Wilkinson, presented the award.
Mr. Rainford “Perry” Bloomfield was honored for his visionary role in developing the Douglas Forrest Building. Former basketball coach Keith Daley made the presentation.
Mr. Alton Brown was posthumously recognized for his extraordinary dedication. His daughter, Sydney Brown, accepted the award on his behalf from Wayne Morris of KCOBA USA Inc.
Principal Dave Myrie received a Distinguished Award for his leadership, presented by President Montaque, KCOBA USA Inc., after being surprised onstage by four KC staff members, including Betty Cummings of the KC Bookshop.
Citations were also presented by Stacey Osborne on behalf of NYC Rep. Selena Brooks-Powers, honoring all awardees.
A Joyful Close
Secretary Winston Henry gave the vote of thanks, recognizing all who made the night a success. Although DJ Prentice’s set wasn’t as long as we wanted it to be, the final hour ignited the dance floor with energy. The evening concluded on a powerful, emotional note as guests joined hands in a circle, singing Bob Marley’s “One Love” — a perfect ending to a memorable night.
Gratitude
To the elegant women who lit up the room, we saw you. And to the gentlemen who proudly wore the purple and white — Fortis forever! Next year we will introduce a Best Dressed award — just a thought!
KCOBA USA thanks all sponsors, journal supporters, and attendees for making the gala a success.
Here's to Mr. Alton Brown. Here's to Mr. Scott—gone but never forgotten. Here's to the board, and for more years of continued excellence.
