Captain Mike and Norma just returned from a dream family trip to Africa

If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Africa, Tanzania should be at the top of your bucket list. This country is organic, culturally rich, and historically significant, with remarkable similarities to many small Caribbean islands—including Jamaica. Having visited three African countries so far, I can confidently say that Tanzania stands out as the most memorable.

This year, our family of 10 (9 adults and 1 child) took the journey together, and it was nothing short of transformative.

To fully enjoy all that Tanzania has to offer, planning ahead is essential. The logistics—especially the ground arrangements are critical to ensuring that you can explore, learn, and engage with the richness of the culture and landscape.

We worked with a travel planner who had previously spent extensive time in Tanzania. Her first-hand experience helped shape our incredible journey. Through her, we were connected with Trek & Hide, a local travel team whose motto says it all: “We know our home better!”

Our lead guide, Timba Kill, holds a degree in Tourism and Culture, and as a bonus, he’s the son of Tanzanian diplomats. He and his team of drivers were knowledgeable, professional, and went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable.

Before You Go: 10 Must-Know Travel Tips:

  1. Plan 5–7 months in advance.
  2. Use a reputable travel planner—do not book through cheap platforms like CheapoAir. (Feel free to contact me for referrals.)
  3. A visa is required for entry.
  4. Get all necessary immunizations and prescriptions ahead of time.
  5. Be aware of the Tanzanian seasons—January to February is warm; June to October is winter, with cooler temperatures.
  6. Pack wisely—clothing should be suitable for both safari and cultural excursions.
  7. Prepare for long flights—16 to 20 hours, depending on connections.
  8. Bring healthy snacks—Tanzanian cuisine may require an acquired taste.
  9. Come with an open mind—you’ll be learning and experiencing a lot.
  10. Jet lag is real—with a 7-hour time difference, your body will need time to readjust upon return.
