On Saturday, March 2, 2013 Kings and Queens dressed to impress, converged on the Flowers Center located in Queens NY. The facility owned and operated by our good friend and Calabar High alum, Dr. Neville Flowers, was the scene of the annual KCOBA USA Inc. (NY Chapter) Winter Scholarship Dance. The difference this time around was the inclusion of our sister school St. Hugh`s. This mind/body combination of resources produced a stellar event.
St. Hugh`s Alumnae Association’s New York Chapter, led by Althea McKayle, showed class and business acumen by seizing the opportunity to partner with KCOBA. This resulted in a successful fund raising campaign that saw the Flowers Center packed tight with almost 300 happy boys and girls, (all grown up) reminiscing about the good old high school days.
St. Hugh`s alum, Celia Boothe, was in the house representing Moet, one of the leading purveyors of fine bubbly. An extremely large bottle of vintage Moet was donated by her Company which was raffled off. All proceeds went to one of our many school programs.
The local Nurses Association President/St. Hugh`s AA VP, Claudette Powell, lauded the efforts of both St. Hugh`s and KCOBANY, led by President Rainford “Lion” Perry, in putting together a solid event. She also reminded the audience of the importance of supporting their respective Alumni Association which helps tremendously in supporting various school aide programs back home.
After the formalities, it was back on the dance floor, rocking to the pulsating sounds of veteran KC disc jockeys Prentice Williams and Glamma Wayne at the controls. They certainly did not disappoint, spinning a nice mix of Soca, Dance Hall and Soul music to the delight of the young and not so young - jamming and singing along to their favorite tunes. All this time my eyes were focused on the buffet being offered, waiting for a chance to “ bruk” the line. Food was expertly and deliciously prepared by St. Hugh`s AA Secretary, Flavia Chin….Hey Ms. Chin, the escovetch fish and Lo Mien was slamming. Thanks.
It was a very good night of clean unadulterated fun. Yeah mon, school mates from way back “buck up” and proceeded to” buy out the bar.” Secretary and Treasurer had big smiles “pon dem face” as the lights were turned on at 3:15 AM and Brinks guards were seen walking towards the bar.
Congratulations KC and St. Hugh`s. Let`s do it again!!
