Saturday, January 18, 2014 was the Second Jamaican David “Wagga” Hunt Scholarship Fundraising Ball. It was a night of glitz, with beautiful and elegantly dressed ladies and finely dressed men, in attendance.  There were a live band and a DJ for the entertainment and excellent food for all to enjoy. 

We were privileged to great music by Donovan Marks & the Rainforest Band, featuring Lenny Kurlou with special guest , Junior Marvin, former lead guitarist with Bob Marley and the Wailers. Also present was DJ Prentice who had the crowd rocking all night.  DJ Prentice was doing such an excellent job that the ladies were upset when he had to take a break for the announcement of raffle prizewinners.

Special guests included Ms. Marsh Coore Lobban, Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) at the Embassy of Jamaica and Mr. Wayne Miller, Market Manager, Northern USA, Grace Foods international.  Again, the sponsors were in full force with their support.  Special thanks is required for Grace Food International, Mr. Joseph Zell, the Embassy of Jamaica, Jamaica Tourist Board, Dadeland Copy, a company owned and operated by Adolph Barclay, a former KC school challenge team captain, Seasons Culinary Services and Negril Eatery. Their contributions helped in a significant way in making this event a resounding success.

The function was held at the National Education Association, Washington DC, in the lavishly stylish Atrium.  Christopher Hunt and his committee members Michael McPherson (Calabar), Lloyd Anderson (KC), Loxley O’Connor (Calabar), Lisa Brown and Garth Pottinger (Munro) once again did an excellent job in organizing and making the event a success.  As the event was winding down, many had great compliments to give and expressed that they were looking forward to the next year. This year, Mr. Dean Martin and his beautiful wife had this to say, “Good afternoon, Just wanted to pass on a “Big” thanks for the outstanding fundraising event in memory of your brother, my wife and I attended. I know the two deserving KC and Calabar students back home are appreciative of the committees’ efforts.  Although I actually attended JC, my wife and I were more than happy to support the cause as Jamaicans.” Like many others before, Mr. Martin came up with a suggestion that next year the program could include pictures and a short bio of the previous year’s award recipients.

It seems the David “Wagga” Hunt Foundation Ball continues to attract the most beautiful and well-dressed females, along with the most entertained patrons who have well thought out and smart suggestions. The “Wagga” Hunt committee deserves all the accolades they receive. They have forged fruitful connections with sponsors, both home and abroad.  This event is used to foster close relationships with the Jamaican community and benefits young men who will one day become leaders and will carry on the tradition of giving back; we of the KC and Calabar family know so well.

Next year should be even better as this event moves from its infancy to its third year.  Many who missed this year missed a great night of fun, food, music and if you are a single man, you missed the many beautiful ladies that came by themselves.  An event organized by KC and Calabar that are both all boys schools will definitely bring out the ladies in droves.  Do not miss next year’s event, because, it will be a night to remember.  

I trust that the David “Wagga” Hunt Foundation Scholarship Ball will continue the legacy of an event well deserved of our compliments.  Christopher, you and your committee did a job that definitely makes the KC and Calabar family and the wider Jamaican diaspora very proud.  Keep up the good work!
