Dr. Derrick Aarons a leading Bioethicist in the English-speaking Caribbean, launched his book, “Vital Communications in Medicine” at the Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on August 28, 2021.
According to Dr. Aarons, “the knowledge shared in my book spans decades of literary scholarship involving medical anthropology, the social sciences, and the life sciences, as well as medicine, nursing, and health care settings. It includes empiric research done within hospitals, as well as recent developments in e-health, telemedicine, and a Covid-19 epidemic that entrenched the world.”
His book explains that “Technological innovations in medicine, e-health, and telemedicine have added another level of complexity for patients’ comprehension of the current landscape in health care - that will require doctors, nurses, and all health professionals to not only ‘navigate’ the system, but also counsel appropriately and communicate effectively with their patients in this new era.”
Some of the important matters addressed in the book include:
· Why effective communication is a critical cornerstone in medicine and health care, and is vital
not only for patient satisfaction but a good health outcome
· The importance of patients and relatives’ communication with health professionals
· A time-efficient ‘three duties’ approach to the healthcare professional – patient interaction
· That problems in communication may occur due to differences in the assumptive worlds of the
doctor and the patient, with appropriate solutions.
Vital Communications in Medicine was reviewed by Professor Denise Eldemire Shearer, Professor of Public Health and Ageing at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Dr. Neveta Sutherland Vaccianna, Consultant Obstetrician Gynecologist, Victoria Jubilee Hospital, as well as Lt. Col. (Ret'd) Oscar L. Derby, Former Director of Civil Aviation.
Aarons graduated Kingston College in 1972 and was Deputy-Headboy in his last year. He went on to graduate from the University of the West Indies (MBBS) and McGill University (MSc and PhD).
The book is now available on Amazon in both e-format and paperback.
