From 1991 to 1992 I had the pleasure of working with the KC Manning Cup team as team manager.
The coach during my tenure was the talented and brilliant Vernon Bell. We had a terrific relationship. At that time, Bell was the General Manager of one of the largest Caribbean business organizations.
My responsibilities included managing the budget, assisting with fundraising and generally helping to ensure that the team remained focused on schoolwork as well as football. From time-to-time, other matters unrelated to football would also need my attention.
I recall that nutrition and punctuality were significant for each member of our Squad. All members of the team received hot meals each day separate and apart from lunch.
Once the fixtures were available, strategies were developed in the ensuing team meetings so that the team was prepared for each game. Coach Bell adopted parts of the Brazilian system including attacking wingbacks - a style he greatly admired.
Preparation for matches included weight training and we also arranged for each team member to get their medical clearance.
I recall Coach Bell arranging to have scouts from US colleges and universities watch our team in action. As a result, several members of the team received football scholarships.
Overall, it was a very rewarding experience working with the Manning cup team. We are grateful to the many sponsors who responded to our requests for support.
I remain ready to serve again should the need arise.
